On-Premise AI Agents: What They Are and When to Use Them
A definition of on-premise AI agent deployment, the real infrastructure trade-offs involved, and when it's the right call versus cloud hosting.
Direct answer
An on-premise AI agent runs entirely on infrastructure the organization physically controls — its own servers or data center — rather than a vendor's cloud environment, typically chosen when data cannot leave the organization's own network under any circumstances.

On-premise vs. local vs. private cloud
These three terms get used loosely and mean different things. On-premise specifically means the organization's own physical or fully-controlled infrastructure. Local can mean a single device (a laptop) rather than organization-wide infrastructure. A private cloud deployment (a vendor's infrastructure in a dedicated, isolated environment) is not on-premise even though it may satisfy similar compliance goals — confirm which one a vendor is actually offering before assuming they're interchangeable.
The real cost of on-premise
- Hardware capital cost, particularly for GPU capacity sufficient to run a capable model at usable latency.
- Ongoing operational burden — patching, scaling, and failure recovery become your team's responsibility rather than a vendor's.
- Model currency — an on-premise deployment doesn't automatically receive a vendor's latest model updates the way a cloud API does; someone has to manage upgrades.
When on-premise is genuinely warranted
On-premise deployment earns its cost when regulatory or contractual requirements make any external data transmission unacceptable regardless of a vendor's compliance posture, or when air-gapped operation is a hard requirement (classified, highly sensitive, or safety-critical environments). For most other cases, a vendor's regional or dedicated cloud offering achieves similar compliance goals at materially lower operational cost.
