India-Hosted AI Models: What "Hosted in India" Actually Means

A definition of India-hosted AI models, why data residency is a separate fact from model origin, and how to verify a hosting claim.

Direct answer

An India-hosted AI model runs inference on infrastructure physically located within India, which is a fact about deployment location, not about whether the model itself was developed in India or trained on Indian-language data — those are three separate, independently verifiable claims.

Three separate facts, often collapsed into one claim

  • India-developed — the model's publisher is headquartered or primarily operating in India.
  • Indic-capable — the model has documented training or evaluation on Indian languages.
  • India-hosted — inference runs on infrastructure located in India, or the vendor offers a specific India region.

Why India-hosted matters for data residency

For organizations with a data-localization requirement — contractual, sectoral, or under the DPDP Act's preference for certain categories of data — the hosting location is the fact that actually matters, independent of who built the model or what languages it supports. A globally-developed model offered through a specific India cloud region can satisfy a hosting requirement that an Indian-developed model hosted only on foreign infrastructure would not.

How to verify a hosting claim

Check the vendor's own infrastructure or region documentation for the specific data center location, not a general 'available in India' marketing statement — region availability for the product interface (e.g. a support portal) is a different claim from where model inference itself actually runs, and vendors don't always distinguish the two clearly.
