Data Residency for AI Agents in India: What to Verify

What "hosted in India" actually needs to mean for an AI agent vendor, and why this site doesn't repeat a vendor's residency claim without a primary source.

Direct answer

"Data hosted in India" can mean the primary database region, a cache or CDN edge node, a backup replica, or a sub-processor's own infrastructure — these are not the same claim, and a vendor's marketing page rarely specifies which one it means. This site records a residency claim only when a vendor's own documentation states it precisely enough to check.

What to ask a vendor, specifically

  • Which data — the primary application database, logs, backups, or all of it — is claimed to stay in India.
  • Which cloud region and provider, by name, so the claim can be checked against that provider's own published region list.
  • Whether any sub-processor (an analytics tool, an email provider, a support-ticket system) routes data outside India even if the core product doesn't.
  • Whether the claim is contractual (in a Data Processing Addendum) or only stated in marketing copy.

Why this isn't a per-vendor residency checklist

A residency claim is only as reliable as the document it's checked against, and that document is specific to one vendor's current infrastructure — which changes as vendors add regions or sub-processors.
