Automated WhatsApp Business AI Chatbots
What the WhatsApp Business Platform's own rules require of an AI chatbot, and why the 24-hour session window matters for design.
Direct answer
A WhatsApp Business AI chatbot operates within Meta's own platform rules — most importantly, free-form messaging is only allowed within a 24-hour window after a user's last message, after which only pre-approved template messages can be sent — design conversational flows around this constraint rather than assuming unrestricted messaging like a website chat widget.

The 24-hour session window shapes the whole design
Unlike a website chat widget with no messaging restriction, WhatsApp's platform rules mean a bot can only send free-form replies within 24 hours of the user's last message — after that window closes, only pre-approved message templates can initiate contact. Any workflow expecting to follow up with a user after that window needs a template message approved in advance, not a dynamically generated one.
Other platform-specific considerations
- Message template approval can take time and is subject to Meta's own review — plan for this lead time rather than assuming instant template availability.
- Business verification status affects messaging limits and features available to the account.
- Opt-in requirements apply — a business generally needs explicit user consent before initiating WhatsApp contact.
